EditShare's professional Video Editor Lightworks is scheduled to become an open source project sometime this year. While the developers are going through the code to get it ready for release as open source, the company has made fully functional executables available free of charge. However, installation programs are so far only available for MS Windows operating systems. A Linux version is promised for later this year.
Lightworks is noteworthy in that it is one of the most advanced professional non-linear video editing systems. It has been used to edit big time movies such as Pulp Fiction, The Departed, Centurion, and Shutter Island.
